Meet Vanessa Hale
Vanessa weaves music, storytelling, and therapeutic practice to create spaces where people can express, heal, and rediscover their authentic voice.
My name is Vanessa Hale (she/they) and I am a singer/songwriter, board-certified music therapist, voice coach, and multi-instrumentalist. I graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, where I studied voice and music therapy.
I was born and raised in Brookline, New Hampshire on the unceded land of the Penacook people. I grew up with tall trees, cold winters, humid and buggy summers, refreshing ponds and rivers, a wild imagination, and a deeply feeling heart.
My relationship with music has been a foundational aspect of my identity since I was very young, and over the years I have been blessed with opportunities to explore the interweavings of my love for music, expressive arts, nature, and community wellness. I find that my passion involves going deep within the muck of our human experience and emerging new with something we might call beautiful.
Writing songs has been an evolving practice for me over the past 8 years, and continues to be a friend who assists me in uncovering what lies beneath the surface of me. My songs often touch on the human experience of navigating friendships and relationships, reconnecting with nature and the world around me, and reintroducing myself to the bridge between soul and the wild. I have found deep peace through deeply troubling experiences when expressing myself creatively and sharing these songs with others. I am not afraid of going there, unveiling that, gently prying this part of myself into view… and holding the space for others to do the same, if they wish.
Through my music therapy and voice coaching practice, I have the humbling opportunity to share the Spirit of Music, who I see as our own creative spirits and inner children. Together we imbue the dark or hidden spaces with the hopefulness we make through art, reflecting our despair back to us, where we make meaning of our experiences. Together we amplify our brightest lights and unique gifts we carry with our songs of celebration.
Throughout my life I have navigated mental health challenges which have ranged from debilitating to manageable, but which have never truly left my side. And through this, music has always been my guide and my way back to myself. When even I cannot hear myself, music helps me listen and understand. Writing a song often provides more answers and greater acceptance, and most importantly, the songs help me remember my part in the greater whole of things.
I believe there is something familiar in music and art that we all know, even if we are not consciously aware of this. Humans have used music to share stories, express emotions, and build community for thousands of years, and I feel it is simply a part of our nature to connect with music in these ways. It is my greatest joy to share my lived experience with others and be a small part of the movement to bring the ancient human gift of music and creativity back into our lives.
